In part one of this series, Spousal Abuse: A Sin of Abomination, we detailed the reason for conducting this journey into the Scriptures. Our purpose is to study what the Bible says about abominations and how they relate to marital conduct that may be overlooked by persons proclaiming Christ as well as the institutional Christian church. Today’s discussion focuses upon the abominable sin of lying.

As mentioned in our first article, I have been hearing a lot of talk lately from those proclaiming Christianity about what is considered an abominable sin. Seemingly for many, the only two abominable sins that relate to marriage are same-sex relationships and divorce. Little notice, or ministry, is given to the at least 15 named abominable sins in the Christian Scriptures. I previously studied this topic, and I wanted to share some of the things we will find in Scripture regarding sins that are an abomination and how they affect persons seeking to promote Bible-based marriages.

Seven Sins of Abomination According to Proverbs 6:16-19 (ESV)

There are six things that the LORD hates, seven that are an abomination to Him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.

If we are to conduct ourselves in a manner according to Scripture, this passage warns us that lying is an abominable sin. If you currently struggle with lying to your spouse through omission or commission, repent and seek the Kingdom of God to stop committing this behavior. If you are what is considered a pathological liar, and you just cannot help lying, you may also want to consider seeking the help of state licensed, professional Christian counselor. In our next installment, we will be discussing the abominable sin of adultery.
