How the Miller Lite Tap the Future Houston Competition Changed Me

“Numbers do not matter as much as the concept.” Daymond John

As a beginning entrepreneur, these were welcomed words from successful business owner and co-star of ABC’s Shark Tank, Daymond John.  Being considered a rookie in this world, I often think that my numbers are not “good enough” for me to make a pitch to potential investors.  It is this thought process that has kept me from taking opportunities designed for start-ups such as my business.  After having the opportunity to interview John during the Miller Lite Tap the Future Pitch Competition’s stop in Houston, I had a life altering “aha” moment. I realized that I am the only one stopping me.  I decided that I need to get out of my way, and that I will never get to “yes” if I do not at least put myself out there.

The Miller Lite competition is an excellent example of a contest that I should have at minimum entered.  After obtaining such great words of wisdom from the entrepreneur panelists, I have a newfound confidence that embraces rejection in order to get to acceptance. Thus, Tap the Future is not only changing the lives of those who enter the competition, it is having a great impact on entrepreneurs who are observing from the sidelines.

While it is too late for me to enter the fun, the journey for business owners in Chicago is not finished. The contest will be making its way to Park West on August 8th, and one lucky person will be on his or her way to winning the $100,000 prize. If you are in the Chicago area, and you are not a contestant, do not let that stop you from being a participant. RSVP here for your opportunity to see the pitch competition live.

I may have missed the party this go-round, but after attending the event in Houston, and having the opportunity to speak with Mr. John and previous contest winners, this will not be my story next year. I will put myself out there. For now, I will follow the competition through to the national finals and celebrate in spirit with the winner.
